Balance. Purpose. Enlightenment.
What makes you happy? I had the happiness secret revealed to me the other day when an elderly gentleman in another state contacted me. He knew I repair old radios, and had one he wanted fixed but no one in his area would tackle it. It was one of the first commercial tube sets built and had been given to his grandmother at Christmas in 1921. We arranged for him to bring it to my shop the next weekend. Since it was a seven-hour trip for him, I wanted to be sure I was ready for him so I took time to gather together all the radio parts I thought I might need.
When he arrived, I laid out the radio and hooked it up using the original instructions that came with it. The tube in it was bad, but I had set a replacement aside just in case. So I put it in. With all the wires for antenna, ground, power supply and headphones coming out of it, the radio looked like it was on life support! And then the moment of truth arrived when I fired it up. I was able to pick up a faint station right away through the headphones and with some tuning got it coming in nice and strong.
I handed the headphones to my customer and watched his face light up when he heard it playing. I had the feeling this must have been the reaction to first hearing radio back in the 1920s. He had never heard it play and it was the one keepsake he had to remind him of his grandmother. When he was a child she had told him about first listening to it. He was delighted to be able to listen to the same radio his grandmother had used.
It really brightened my day to see the wonder and amazement on his face at something so commonplace today — listening to a radio. His happiness in hearing this radio for the first time matched mine in being able to restore a historical bit of radio history to its original use for its owner! By thinking about him and taking the time to have everything I might need available, I was able to bring a little bit of wonder to another individual. And seeing his face light up brought me a deep sense of joy.
I know you’ve experienced something similar. Did you ever surprise someone with a gift they weren’t expecting? The look on their face as they take in what you’ve done for them is worth all the trouble. And we all know people who can put a smile on your face by telling you a lame joke or finding the humor in some serious situation. They can cheer you up just by being around. They have had the happiness secret revealed to them and chances are, they’re very happy people.
So is the happiness secret revealed. You can count on being happy if you make someone else happy!

I had a similar experience recently with an old lady I visit on occasion. At my last visit, an attendant was selling calendars at a cost of $10 for the benefit of this institution. I bought one to help the cause, and also for my personal use. Because it was illustrated with drawings made by residents there, this calendar seemed especially interesting to her, so I decided to offer her this little gift. She was delighted of course, but not being used to such expressions of kindness, she melted into tears, thanking me warmly. Considering her rejoicing and appreciation for such a little gift, it was as if my small investment of $10 had been multiplied a hundredfold to the profit of my own happiness and gratitude for having this opportunity to perform this good act.
This brings to mind what happened yesterday morning when I was going to work. As I was boarding the vehicle, I exchanged greetings with the driver and asked about the welfare of his family. When I got to my destination and was leaving, the driver took my hand and remarked that he was most grateful for the concern I showed about his family as he never thought that someone would be so thoughtful about such matters in this time of hardship, selfishness and indifference prevailing everywhere. The contentment that was revealed in him really made me happy that I had stirred happiness in another.
I am grateful for this story and for the replies from Connie and RM. Some days I feel discouraged over my slow progress, and I grow weary over how much work and attention is needed to improve self. This discouragement robs me of my happiness and zaps my strength for the journey. I appreciate this reminder that the positive and powerful energy that is created as a consequence of shifting focus from self over to others IS the fuel which will sustain me. Plus, being kind and thoughtful to others is a relatively easy task in the scope of things, and each new day provides considerable opportunities to refill my tank. Bring on tomorrow!
I agree it is much more work than I expected, and progress seems so slow! But I think of the progress of a screw with many thereads and barely any incline. It takes many more turns to fasten it, but is is so much stronger! I also find encouragement when I look back at a past experience and what I learned from it at the time, and when I compare that with what I now understand I realize that I actually learned a lot more. And I’m sure that I will find even more of the ‘meat’ as I get older and spend more time analyzing my past! Like rereading a lesson you always find that you understand more than previously. I don’t know enough to judge others accurately, so it stands to reason that I probably don’t judge myself or my progress accurately either! I’m sure our efforts will pay off in ways we have yet to even consider,
In order to be happy you have to be thankful for what you do have. Think about others and their situations and be helpful if you can, don’t get me wrong there really are some who don’t deserve your help but do it from your heart and it will never feel like anything but helpful. I been depressed, down, hopeless, lifeless the list goes on, but the moment I decided to think positive always, my life began to change for the better, you must treat those the way you want to be treated it’s the ultimate universal law of Karma. Think Bright See Bright. Keep your head up you got this.
Not only is this writer a successful example of universal laws in action, but he reveals a deeper truth about Lemurians. He is preserving and carrying forward the best of the past. Competent to repair and refurbish a 95-year-old radio, he is saving what’s important to us from long ago. And that’s what the Lemurian Fellowship and Order are doing, on a larger scale and much longer timeline. From Lemuria, Atlantis, India, Egypt and every civilization of note, the Elder Brothers have preserved all that’s worth saving. They’ve given us key highlights through the Lemurian lessons, and are patiently observing what we do with this rare gift. If we make a success of this opportunity, advancing personally and growing in numbers, more will be released to us. I wish each of you outstanding success in the year ahead!
This wonderful and elegant story reminds me of a story told by a wise man many years ago. It was called “The Secret of Happiness,” and arrived at the same conclusion, ending with the admonition: “The key to happiness is making others happy.”
